Course Overview
The goal of this 1 day training is to impart a working knowledge of IP services, it should allow the audience to understand the concepts of the domain name system (DNS) and dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP).
 

With this knowledge the participant will be able to:

  • describe how the DNS name space is organised
  • explain how IP hostnames are constructed
  • describe how DNS servers operate
  • explain the types of DNS servers (Bind, Lucent, Microsoft)
  • explain what the dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) is, why it is important and how it differs from the BootStrap protocol (BootP)
  • explain the concept of a “lease time”
  • list the 5 DHCP client states and explain what the client does in each one
  • describe the different situations where IP broadcasts are used vs. unicasts between DHCP client and server
  • explain how the IP specifications allow for broadcasts to cross router boundaries and see this demonstrated by tracing sample sessions
  • see a number of different networking scenarios that can be used to address specific networking requirements

Network managers, designers, planners, analysts, IT- and service providers who are responsible for the operation and management of a DNS/DHCP server infrastructure
