The domain name system (DNS) is responsible, among other things, for assigning IP addresses to computer names and vice versa in a TCP/IP network. The naming system is structured hierarchically in domains. This makes possible a decentralised information management.

A functioning DNS – particularly in heterogeneous networks – is critical for communication among servers, printers and workstations. SMTP-based mail routing is also dependent on DNS information. With the introduction of Windows 2000, a cleanly structured DNS was essential in medium-sized and small networks. A failure or incorrect configuration can easily lead to a complete crash of an entire network section.

Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) allows the automatic configuration of computers and printers for participation in a TCP/IP network. Instead of configuring each computer individually, administrators can preset the parameters centrally on a DHCP server. The issuing of an IP address to an individual computer can also be automated, which has major advantages for occasional users with notebooks. Properly used, DHCP can lead to significant savings in administration costs for networks and network pieces.
